June 12-14, 2009 2009 Western National Event
Sounds of cannon booming, muskets firing and bayonets clashing returned to Brice’s Crossroads battlefield following a 145-year silence on June 12-14. The Brice’s Crossroads National Battlefield Commission and the City of Baldwyn hosted the 145th anniversary re-enactment of the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads, marking the June 10, 1864 Confederate victory.
Cleburne’s Division of Re-enactors, Inc. brought thousands of Confederate and Union troops from 36 states to Baldwyn for a children’s discovery day and two days of camping and fighting on the 1400 acre battlefield in this Western National Event.
Thousands of spectators enjoyed visiting in camps and watching the fight on the original battlefield site. Thirty-five period sutlers were set up to sell their wares and demonstrate their crafts along with demonstrations of a field hospital, engineering, music, food, infantry and cavalry from the 1860’s era by re-enactors.
More than 100 children attended the Discovery Day, many with their parents, and the community joined with re-enactors for a Friday night reception with a period band performing 1860’s music. The reception was hosted by the Baldwyn Main Street/Chamber.
Camps were open beginning Friday and re-enactors performed historically authentic scenarios of the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads on Saturday. Rain and high winds prevented the Sunday reenactment of the Battle of Tupelo on the 1400-acre battlefield site located five miles west of Baldwyn.
Programs and lectures were presented all day Saturday at hour intervals in the Activity Tent on the grounds.
Modern vendors were available to sell food, prints, books and ornaments.
The event was successful because of the commitment of local volunteers, especially members of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry, Cleburne’s Division. Thank you to all who volunteered, participated and visited.
